WHAT I HEARD: Women In The World
This past Tuesday was International Women’s Day and I had the honor of attending New York Times’ Women in the World event at the Park Hyatt in Washington, DC. Tina Brown, founder of Live Media / Women In The World andThe Daily Beast, moderated a panel of global change-makers who came to share their compelling stories. The agenda included discussions by Manizha Nadari who battles for women’s rights in Afghanistan where both ISIS and the Taliban deny basic human rights to women. US Attorney General, Loretta Lynch, who spoke about current national security issues and the civil rights problems in Ferguson, Missouri. The highlight of the night, in my opinion, was the moving interview with the fearless Nigerian activist and special Advisor to the Ogun State Governor (Nigeria), Hafsat Abiola. So many more great and heroic women leaders were also present to tell their stories.
Thinking it would be a great learning experience, I brought my daughter, Alexa (a Northwestern journalism grad student). She was completely taken by the sheer courage and leadership of these women. It was exciting to see all the young people attending and hopeful future journalists. The event was a true testament to the fact that women are making huge strides and contributions to the global discussion on so many levels.
