THE DC ARTS CENTER’S CURATORIAL INITIATIVE PRESENTS:

INTRINSIC TOOL

CURATED BY APPRENTICE CURATOR CARTER WYNNE

WASHINGTON, DC

On view through 11/10/2024

DC is emerging as a hub for young artists and curators like Carter Wynne, a self-taught artist under the apprenticeship of independent curator and creative consultant Fabiola R. Delgado. Wynne's innovative exhibition, Intrinsic Tool, is the first to showcase her work at DC Arts Center. As part of the center's Curatorial Initiative, this exhibition celebrates the revolutionary potential of play. It features artists who push the boundaries of creativity and challenge societal norms through playful experimentation and critical thinking. Committed to nurturing emerging talent, The DC Arts Center offers a unique year-long Apprenticeship Curatorial Program. Selected apprentices work closely with experienced curators to develop essential curatorial skills and gain hands-on experience planning and executing exhibitions.

Intrinsic Tool delves into the intersection of play, experimentation, and resistance. The exhibition showcases artists who challenge societal norms through innovative techniques, from intuitive brushstrokes to imaginative world-building. By redefining play as a powerful tool for social change, the artists inspire viewers to think critically and embrace cognitive freedom.

The Curatorial Initiative is one of our signature educational programs here at The DC Arts Center," said Executive Director Sean Elias. “Wynne's work invites us to explore the profound intersections of imagination, resilience, and freedom—reminding us that through play, we find new ways to engage with ourselves and the world around us. This exhibition is not just an artistic experience but a call to embrace the transformative power of joy and creativity in shaping our futures."

With a civil rights and community organizing background, Carter brings a unique perspective to her work as a curator and artist. She utilizes visual language to challenge oppressive systems. Her curatorial practice delves into the intersections of play, body, and freedom, while her paintings explore subversive narratives and marginalized perspectives.

Carter’s paintings have been exhibited throughout the DMV, most recently at IA&A Hillyer Gallery in Washington, D.C., and Sheila and Richard Riggs Gallery in Baltimore, MD.
